NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - North Myrtle Beach may look different the next time you drive through on Highway 17.

The beach access points are now color coded. Mayor Marilyn Hatley says this color coding is an attempt at helping North Myrtle Beach stand out.

Red is on the signs for Cherry Grove, taupe is Crescent Beach, blue is Ocean Drive, and the color for Windy Hill has not yet been decided.

"They were all incorporated little beaches in 1968. We formed one city - the city of North Myrtle Beach - cause people still identify those areas in those four names. We decided to see what we could do to make it easier," said Hatley.

Hatley also says the new signs will help tourists get around town.

"You could say, 'I'm on 21st Avenue South, look for the taupe colored sign that has Crescent Beach written on it,'" explained Hatley.

Cody Andrus is on a road trip from Ohio and he thinks the signs will help.

"We ended up getting lost for about five hours because we needed to be in Myrtle Beach and we needed to be in North Myrtle Beach," said Andrus.

City officials say the new signs should be up by the end of this year.
