doris day

doris day

Today's cover story is an ode to the classic wooden carousels in the Bay Area - we've got six. See Peter Hartlaub's story and some great photos on Page 12.

Jesse Hamlin writes about a different kind of classic on Page 15: Mary Cleere Haran, whose show pays tribute to Doris Day.

Yet another classic: the 1974 Zaire music festival connected to the Muhammad Ali-George Foreman "Rumble in the Jungle" boxing match. "Soul Power" documents it; Rachel Leibrock's story is on Page 18. Also in movies: Michael OrdoƱa interviews Joseph Gordon-Levitt about "(500) Days of Summer" (Page 20); and Deborah Martin writes about movies set in a single night, like the new "I Love You, Beth Cooper" (Page 22).

Aidin Vaziri's Pop Quiz is bigger than usual today because it's about Kenny Chesney, who's about to put on another huge show at AT&T Park. See Page 32.

On the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the current incarnation of his Radio Waves column, Ben Fong-Torres picks his favorite items (Page 34).
